Lovely puts a spinning speaker cabinet in a room of its own. The horn and drum have their own momentum: the horn responds quickly, while the heavier drum takes its time. Change the speed and hear them pull apart and settle into a new rhythm.

Tube drive adds warmth and grit before the sound reaches the rotors. Stereo microphones catch the moving sound, while a physically modelled basement reverb chamber gives it somewhere to bloom. The horn’s position shapes the reflections as it turns.

Speed — slow, wide chorale to fast tremolo. The rotors have their own inertia: push the control and the horn gets there first, the drum follows. That little disagreement is where the magic is.

Gain — cut back for a cleaner, quieter sound, or boost into tube-style compression and overdrive. Center keeps the reference tone and level.

Balance — blend drum against horn. More drum for weight, more horn for shimmer, somewhere in the middle for the classic sound.

Then the lights go out

Flip the right-hand switch to change the mood. The garden turns fluorescent and tape-like pitch drift takes the sound somewhere hazier, while the cabinet keeps turning.

At the heart of Lovely is a model of a physical basement: concrete walls, room resonances and an adjoining space connected through a doorway. The rotating horn sends sound through that geometry, changing the colour and timing of the reflections as it moves. The room is part of the instrument, with a little more of it coming through in the dark.
